“I’m going to be holding a baby next year!”

Millie* and her husband are saving up to buy a house. He had a decent job in Upstate, NY, and Millie was offered a job in FL. Excited by the lower taxes, sun, and prospect of fast-tracking their home-buying journey, Millie accepted the position. She and her husband didn’t like the idea of being separated, but they agreed to visit regularly and call often.

In the Sunshine State, Millie’s life went dark. She was abused, and a positive pregnancy test followed.

She flew back to NY and took the first appointment she could find. It was at a CompassCare medical office.

Millie’s nurse, like all CompassCare nurses, is specially trained to handle cases of abuse. Upon hearing Millie’s story, she asked if Millie had a safe place to stay. Millie said she did—in FL.

“I need to get this out of me!” she told her nurse. Millie said that her boss wouldn’t be happy that she was pregnant, but she needed to keep her job in FL. As Millie talked through her situation, she felt like she had met a true friend.

“I’m not keeping it, so he doesn’t need to be here…
…Can you get my husband, please?”

When it came time for the ultrasound, Millie emphatically said she did not want her husband present. “I’m not keeping it, so he doesn’t need to be here.” Her nurse proceeded with the ultrasound.

Millie got to see her baby on the screen. Her nurse pointed out the flicker of the heartbeat and turned up the volume so Millie could hear the steady rhythm.

“Can you get my husband, please?” Millie asked softly, mesmerised by the sight and sound of her baby.

He and Millie didn’t want the ultrasound to end, both fixated on the screen. They gratefully accepted the ultrasound pictures given to them by the nurse.

Upon leaving, Millie said, “I am keeping my baby!” She repeated that line many times, hardly able to contain her excitement. At one point, she held out her hands and, in awe, said, “I’m going to be holding a baby next year!”

A picture is worth a thousand words. But each baby pictured is infinitely valuable. On behalf of women like Millie, thank you.
