Global Population Crisis Looms as People Stop Having Babies

A global baby bust is giving birth to crisis. For a nation to sustain itself its fertility rate must be 2.1 babies per woman. The U.S. fertility rate is 1.8, East Asia’s is 1.7, and Western Europe’s is 1.6. Fewer babies mean an aging population resulting in a demographic cliff.

As the population ages, the ability for society to bear children in numbers high enough to sustain a nation’s infrastructure sunsets with catastrophic effects cascade to the economy and medical system. The death spiral for Spain is very real; for every baby born three people die. China, known for its forced abortion tactics, reversed course and is now toying with requiring couples to have at least two children or be penalized with increased taxes.
