U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson was asked in a confirmation hearing if she could “provide a definition for the word ‘woman.’” Jackson’s laughably serious reply? “I’m not a biologist.”
America’s current social distress is overwhelming.
A narcissistic humanism now parades herself in a naked victory dance, celebrating the foolishness of absolute personal autonomy through a cultural cacophony of hyper-individualism, materialistic careerism, toxic feminism giving rise to fictional egalitarianism in the church and home, homosexuality and the ruse of same-sex marriage, sterile sex among Christian marriages, destructively low fertility rates, IVF killing 10 babies for every one they create, rampant divorce, abortion as “medical care,” legalization of vices like marijuana, gambling and pornography, skyrocketing suicide, “doctor” assisted suicide, systemic sexual abuse of children in school curriculum, normalization of transgender dysphoria, and the modern slavery of human sex-trafficking.
| As God exits our cultural consciousness, with Him leaves all hope of human meaning… and the ability to “secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity.” |
Our reality is hauntingly similar to that described by Paul in his letter to the Romans. The world self-congratulates its progressive confusion as enlightenment. But Scripture’s view is that this wicked way of thinking and living does not cause God’s wrath but is itself God’s wrath, giving us over to the consequences of rejecting His wisdom in favor of our own. The Apostle gave the reason why societies crumble, as America’s seems to be. “Professing to be wise they became fools and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man…” (Rom. 1:22-23a). And what was the result of the great exchange? “God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of women…” (Rom 1:26-27a).
This evil exchange, where men and women forget each other and their own natural function, began in Genesis chapter three, Adam rejecting his moral headship as Eve, being quite deceived (1 Tim. 2:14), usurped it. Both of them, forgetting their Creator’s warning, appraised their wisdom as better than God’s, looking to secure life and blessing apart from Him. Instead, they inherited broken relationships, thorns, sweat, pain, and death.
Thankfully, the good Lord wasted no time, going to work once again (Gen. 3:15), this time in the mystery of saving a sin-sick world, manifested in the revelation of the Lord Jesus Christ (Eph. 3:4-6).
Like Adam and Eve, America and the Modern West fail to obey God too, instead choosing whatever is right in our own eyes. Therefore, we no longer understand what it means to be human, what it means to be a man or a woman, to say nothing of a father or a mother.
Over 36,000 Lives Saved Since 2008
The Church, through CompassCare, is making a difference on the front lines of America’s abortion battle, New York.
By God’s grace, over the last 18 years, 36,000 women and babies have been rescued from abortion. Actively deploying the New York State Abortion Reduction Plan, with your help, we anticipate doubling that number of lives saved over the next ten years.
But these examples do not prove what Gorsuch apparently thinks they prove. The Amish, Quakers, and Catholics are all part of the broad Christian tradition. Their differences were real and sometimes profound, but denominational diversity is not the same as the absence of a common religious inheritance.
The result? Impotent, feminized (1 Tim. 2:12-13) churches afraid to preach the full counsel of God (2 Tim. 4:3). Corrupt government justifying the wicked and condemning the righteous (Prov. 17:15). Families dwindling in size and social influence (Jer. 9:21).
How did America arrive at our current moral anemia? Chronic fatherlessness gives us a clue.
Around the turn of the 20th century, America and, in many ways, the Church, were converted to a kind of practical atheism. Bewitched away from Scripture as our final authority.
We forgot God in whose image we are made. And when we forget God, we no longer understand what it means to be human, male and female (Gen. 1:27). Put another way, we subjected God’s wisdom to our own; we subjected God’s revelation to man’s ‘rationality.’
The intellectual lie the Modern West inherited from the so-called Enlightenment is the belief, held over against the witness of Scripture, that human reason alone can attain to all truth apart from God. Paul said, “But you did not learn Christ in this way” (Eph. 4:20). And since “truth is in Jesus” (Eph. 4:21), we look for wisdom not in ourselves but at the source.
Paul sets up his argument to the church, saying, “So I say, and affirm together with the Lord, that you walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind, being darkened in their understanding…because of the hardness of their heart” (Eph. 4: 17-18). And since the Scripture says, “The heart is more deceitful than all else and desperately sick…” (Jer. 17:9), we must not subject God’s revelation to the interpretation of man. For the Apostle Peter even warns us, “but know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation” (2 Pt. 1:20).
But the self-styled “enlightened” humanity is like a foolish sailor insisting there is no leviathan under the water because he experiences no sign of him above it. Modern man, intellectually armed only with the meager data his five senses can give him, along with an irrational faith in Evolutionary Theory, confidently insists that because God cannot be empirically observed, He must not exist. So, America proclaimed through the Supreme Court, the education system, the media, the medical system, and every level of government that one is no longer permitted to proclaim the truth of God’s existence.
Denying the existence of God, the moral law, or anything beyond what you personally can see, hear, taste, smell, or touch is like a child who closes his eyes and, in the darkness, believes everyone stopped existing.
The malignant logical conclusion to this narrow-minded ignorance? Humanity is nothing more than a cosmic accident with no purpose and no inherent value.
The result is thoroughgoing materialism, a belief—devoid of reason, mind you—that there is nothing more to this world than the physical. The unrelenting mantra of materialism is simple: “Since we came from nowhere, we are going nowhere.” The resulting and socially devastating filter for personal decisions and behavior pushes out any notion of noble virtue, degrading to the merely animalistic: maximize pleasure, minimize pain.
And like windmills competing with a nuclear power plant, virtue becomes absurd and with it, life itself.

Little wonder that suicide rates are skyrocketing, aided by murderous doctors and legislators through legalized doctor-assisted death and euthanasia. What is the solution to physical pain, emotional distress, or a tough medical prognosis? Death.
We are no longer solving the equation. We are simply eliminating the calculus altogether and calling it math.
The materialistic drumbeat is pounded millions of times a day in a million different ways through communist trained schoolteachers, secular-trained doctors, an erotic entertainment industry, and a power-drunk government, incinerating the only moral framework that could hope to bind society together. We as a culture swallowed the poison pill, eliminating any realistic chance of a sustainable civil order.
To the cloistered consumer, self-described as a Christian living among the cultural echoes of that final toll of a church bell, this may all seem like an overstatement for effect.
And so I am compelled to ask, which savior are we pursuing? Is it really Jesus?
We’ve all seen them, or perhaps at one time were “them,” pushing aside God, looking to anything and anyone else for salvation except Jesus. The medical system and vaccines save our bodies from disease. The educational system saves our minds from ignorance. The economic system preserves our standard of living. The smartphone saves us from boredom. Birth control and abortion shelter us from the cost and inconvenience of childbearing. Nursing homes and euthanasia shield us from the discomfort of caring for our aging parents.
The explosion of this atheistic atom bomb in our schools over the last several generations hurled the shrapnel of isolation and hopelessness through every sector of society. Careerism saves women from marriage. Porn and loose women save men from the responsibility of wives and children. Women proudly replace children with pets, touting ridiculous “Dog Mom” bumper stickers.
And as God exits our cultural consciousness, with Him leaves all hope of human meaning, a shared moral framework that can sustain civil order, and the ability to “secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity” (Preamble, U.S. Constitution).
The antidote for America’s moral cancer? The Gospel of Jesus Christ. Jesus was crucified for our sins. Rose on the third day in victory, taking death captive. And He will come again to judge the living and the dead according to God’s standard of all that is good and right, not man’s.
Therefore, we must repent and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, for His righteous work alone can save us from certain doom and teach us what it means to be made in God’s image, male and female.
For if we are made in God’s image, then only in knowing God can we know ourselves.
