When a woman faces an unplanned pregnancy, she frequently feels trapped. She’s often alone, and the vacuum inside her emotions often sucks out healthy decision-making. Zuri* came to CompassCare after visiting urgent care for extreme nausea and vomiting. She found out she was pregnant and was diagnosed with hyperemesis, a condition that can be debilitating during pregnancy.
She told her nurse, “I just want to put this pregnancy behind me and feel better.” Zuri explained she needed to get an abortion so she could move on from her relationship with the controlling man who was the father of the baby.
Her nurse provided her with anti-nausea medication, which offered some relief, and performed an ultrasound exam. When Zuri saw her 8-week-old baby and heard the heartbeat, she was moved. She was relieved to learn about community resources such as housing for women fleeing abusive relationships and CompassCare’s mentoring program, MotherCare. When her nurse shared the Gospel with her, Zuri surrendered her life to Jesus.
Despite those positive indicators, the overwhelming nausea wore her down. Looking for an emotional emergency exit, Zuri scheduled an abortion. Over the next several weeks, Zuri wrestled constantly about whether she would get an abortion.
“Could I get some prenatal vitamins?”
Her MotherCare mentor, Val, remained engaged and available to talk and help Zuri in practical ways, including driving a distance to pick her up and bring her to her appointments at CompassCare. Then, after one of her CompassCare visits, she was awestruck seeing the arms and legs of her baby moving on the screen. Then she uttered the six words, signaling an end to her inner turmoil: “Could I get some prenatal vitamins?”
Val stayed in contact with Zuri long after the father of the baby abandoned her. The nausea eased, and ultimately, she gave birth to a beautiful baby. That was over five years ago, and Zuri’s baby is just entering Kindergarten. Zuri and Val remain friends. Val said recently, “Zuri has grown stronger and more confident and is an awesome mom to her thriving children.”
Prayerfully,
The CompassCare Team
