Charity’s Story: Why We Walk for Life

New York abortion estimates are skyrocketing as high as 118,000 per year. New York is America’s abortion capital. When a woman faces an unplanned pregnancy, she feels trapped, stuck, like she “needs” an abortion. And the person who often causes her to feel that way? The father of the baby.

That is Charity’s story. She is in her early 20s, just figuring out how to navigate the day-to-day. She found CompassCare online and scheduled an in-person appointment through one of CompassCare’s TeleCare nurses. Her mom came with her. The ultrasound confirmed a healthy baby.

“This is God giving me another chance.”

She said she felt scared and hopeful at the same time. She knew the boyfriend wouldn’t want her to continue the pregnancy. Like many of her friends, she had dropped out of school. She told the nurse she felt like a failure. A close friend of Charity’s had an abortion and regretted it. Yet, she saw this baby as a gift. “This is God giving me another chance.”

The nurse agreed and suggested that being pregnant pointed to a greater purpose for her life. Through tears, Charity submitted to Jesus as her Lord and Savior as she and her nurse prayed together. Her mom watched with tears of joy, telling the nurse she had been praying for her daughter for years.

Charity returned for a follow-up appointment, a bit sullen; she had broken up with her boyfriend because she decided to have the baby. But God used the follow-up ultrasound that day to turn her sorrow into joy. “Look at that baby! I’m scared, but I can do this!”

A network of community resources are key for Charity to thrive. The nurse gave her information about one of CompassCare’s MotherCare mentors at a local church. She also received a list of community resource referrals to assist her with everything from prenatal care, insurance, housing, and financial assistance. As doubts persistently fill her mind, Charity asked her nurse, “Please keep praying for me, and for my baby.”

Let us all join Charity’s nurse in prayer.
