World-Changing Unplanned Pregnancy—Merry Christmas

She found out she was pregnant. It wasn’t planned.

She was engaged. He was building his trade.

What would her family say? Would they be shunned by their community?

He wanted to break up with her…put her away because of the shame. But he was encouraged to support her.

They had no health care, were not financially stable, and when the baby finally came, they had no place to stay.

Yet, the baby was born, became the greatest King there ever was or will be. He made a way for the world to be at peace with itself and with God…that baby’s name is Jesus.

God became flesh to save mankind at just the right time. Scripture says, “But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons” (Galatians 4:4-5). Buying our lives back from sin and death meant that Jesus shed His infinitely valuable blood, revealing the infinite value God places on each of us.

Jesus was born into a world so dark and inhospitable that an innkeeper relegated His laboring mother to give birth amongst animals. Children were so disposable the earthly king ordered the mass killing of infant boys around Bethlehem, safeguarding his political power against the threat of a foretold newborn King.

For a woman facing an unplanned pregnancy and her preborn baby, the world is just as dark.

The solution to the depravity and oppression today is the same as it was 2,000 years ago: Immanuel, God with us. As the Gospel of Luke proclaims, Jesus is the One “To shine upon those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace” (Luke 1:79).
