Why did Jesus say, “The kingdom of God belongs to such as these”?

Jesus was only ever angry with all twelve disciples when those disciples rebuked parents for bringing babies to be blessed by Him. In Mark chapter 10, Jesus reprimands the disciples because He says, “the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.”

What is it about a baby making him the perfect picture of heaven’s citizen? A baby has no legal standing, voice, or resources of his own. Unless someone takes responsibility for him, he will die of simple exposure within hours. A sinner before a holy God is no different than that baby. Unless Jesus exchanges His life for the sinner’s plight at the cross, he will die of exposure to his sin. In essence Jesus is saying, ‘Disciple, you ought to know, that baby is you.’
